Laing O'Rourke

Laing O’Rourke’s safety framework is designed to disrupt, challenge and change the traditional approach to safety. It’s a radical approach based on trust, consultation and engagement, which places people at the heart of decision making.

Dubbed MZ Next Gear, the framework adheres to a set of rules that shake up the traditional view of safety management. People are seen as the solution to safety problems, not the cause. Safety is the presence of positives, rather than the absence of negatives. Safety is seen as an ethical – not bureaucratic – activity.

Any empowered worker can be a project safety leader and staff at all levels are encouraged to deliver safety campaigns and engagement programs. Custom mobile apps put the system at everyone’s fingertips, and reporting and risk assessment tools are available to everyone.

The safety management system is even available on a public website, making MZ Next Gear policies and standards available not only to Laing O’Rourke staff, but also contractors, the construction industry and the world.

"It was a fantastic recognition of the efforts of the entire workforce. It provided further motivation to our teams that continue to live our Next Gear principles and drive for a positive approach to safety on all of our sites." Mark Dimmock, Region Director.
