KERRY DENT - CABONNE COUNCIL

BEST INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTION TO WORKPLACE HEALTH AND SAFETY

Cabonne Council is typical of any rural council in operation across NSW, with a hard-working labour force providing town maintenance, road construction, water and sewer services to the population in central west NSW.

Cabonne’s Kerry Dent has had it tougher than some, tasked with manually removing and cleaning heavy sewer pumps. It was a dirty job made worse by the fact that Kerry was at a real risk of a debilitating manual task injury.

Using materials found in the council depot, Kerry designed and developed a portable device to do the heavy lifting. Made up of two supports and a portable winch, the device is assembled over the pump well and a length of nylon rope is attached to the pump for easy lifting.

Kerry’s lifting device has since been patented, with more being manufactured for use throughout Cabonne Council.

It was such a buzz to win this award. I could personally see the risk in what we were doing when we were working on these sewer pumps, and all I wanted to do was make things easier and safer. To have my design acknowledged and patented is very rewarding", says Kerry.
