As the business has grown, Pride Investment Holdings has developed and implemented an innovative and systematic approach to OHS management through a program called ‘Take PRIDE in workplace safety’.
The program is not just compliant with legislation but forges a positive OHS culture throughout the organisation, blending OHS messages into every aspect of their business. In the development of the program, Pride Investment Holdings consulted with staff in both formal and informal ways, strengthening their worker’s commitment towards their own welfare and safety at work.
The ‘Take PRIDE in workplace safety’ program focuses on two main areas — risk awareness and creating a family friendly workplace. As part of the focus on risk awareness, Pride Investment Holdings sought to involve all workers in the development of relevant safe work practices. Here workers were encouraged to identify workplace hazards through checklists, policies, procedures, training and registers.
The other main element of the program involved creating a family friendly workplace, this environment was seen as critical to increase staff satisfaction. Pride Investment Holdings implemented policies and procedures that supported workers and their families, improved retention rates and reduced absenteeism. The polices, such as leave arrangements and staff incentive programs, increased productivity, reduced costs associated with staff turnovers and increases the skills and OHS knowledge of workers.

Eminent Waste Pty Ltd trading as All Types of Rubbish (ATR) is a family owned company that has been providing a comprehensive range of removal services within the Sydney area for over 18 years. These services include rubbish removal, excavation and bobcat services, asbestos removal, as well as commercial and residential demolition services.
Initiative
After participating in WorkCover’s 2009 Mentor Program, ATR recognised deficiencies in their OHS system. Instead of simply filling the gaps they decided to start from scratch and recreate their OHS safety management system. The system directs and encourages consistent standards of safety across all operational areas of ATR, this is achieved through an in-house training program, basic first aid courses, improved safety assessments and new supervisor training manuals.
The system allowed ATR to embed safety as a core principle in their operations and allow workers to take ownership of their OHS responsibilities. The system is now used to formulate accurate quotes for ATR’s clients, outlining the potential hazards and the measures necessary to eliminate risks.
